Cardamom beetle

Systematic position: The cardamom beetle (Coccotrypes cardamomi) belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. As a specialized pest, it is primarily recognized for its devastating impact on specific high-value tropical crops, causing significant economic losses in the spice industry.

Host plants and damage: The primary host of this beetle is cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum). Both adult beetles and larvae target the fruit capsules. They bore into the seeds, consuming the interior and leaving behind waste products. This feeding behavior destroys the aromatic and medicinal properties of the seeds, rendering the product unmarketable for culinary and medicinal purposes.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Coccotrypes cardamomi is closely tied to the fruit development of the host plant. Females bore into the capsules to oviposit. The resulting larvae feed on the seed tissue, completing their development stages inside the pod. Pupation also occurs within the fruit, after which mature adults emerge to mate and start the next generation, often within the same storage unit.

Pest significance: The damage caused by the cardamom beetle is often insidious. Infestation can occur in the field just before harvest or spread rapidly in storage facilities. Because the larvae remain hidden inside the seed pods, initial signs of infestation are difficult to detect until the exit holes appear, leading to severe quality degradation of commercial spice shipments.

Control measures: Managing this pest requires strict adherence to agricultural hygiene and post-harvest practices. Recommended strategies include:

• Proper sanitation of storage facilities to remove residual debris.
