Congo coffee beetle
Coccotrypes congonus
Description
The Congo coffee beetle (Coccotrypes congonus) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. This beetle is notorious for its ability to bore into the seeds of coffee plants, causing major economic losses in tropical coffee-producing regions worldwide.
The primary host for this beetle is the coffee fruit (Coffea species). The adult beetles are attracted to the developing or mature berries, where they drill deep into the endosperm of the seeds. By establishing a breeding site within the seed, they create an environment that is highly protected from predators and many conventional contact pesticides.
The lifecycle of Coccotrypes congonus is characterized by development occurring entirely within the infested seed. After mating, the female excavates a gallery inside the bean, where she deposits her eggs. Larvae hatch and feed on the internal tissues of the seed, progressing through several instars before pupating and emerging as adults, which often fly to infect new coffee cherries.
Damage caused by this beetle is severe, leading to the destruction of the coffee bean's internal structure. Infested beans exhibit small, round entry holes, which immediately downgrade the product's commercial value. In cases of high infestation, the nutritional content and flavor profile of the coffee are ruined, making the harvest virtually unsellable in global markets.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural control is paramount, involving the diligent collection and disposal of fallen "ground" cherries that act as reservoirs for the beetles. During outbreaks, target-specific insecticide applications can be utilized. Furthermore, continuous monitoring with pheromone-based traps is essential to detect early infestations and prevent the beetle from spreading to healthy plantations.
