Coccotrypes eggersi
Coccotrypes eggersi
Description
Coccotrypes eggersi is a small bark beetle belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae within the Curculionidae (weevils) family. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that specializes in infesting the generative organs of plants, specifically targeting seeds and fruits with hard protective layers.
The pest affects a wide array of tropical and subtropical crops. It causes severe economic damage to coffee plantations, date palms, and various leguminous and oilseed crops. Due to its cryptic nature and ability to burrow deep inside fruit, the beetle is largely protected from external environmental factors.
The biology of this species is defined by the female's behavior of drilling an entry hole into the fruit to establish a gallery within the seed. Egg-laying and larval development occur inside this gallery, where the larvae feed on seed tissues, effectively destroying the internal structure and destroying the seed's viability.
Typical signs of infestation include small, uniform circular holes on the surface of seeds or fruits. The interior displays tunnels packed with frass and excrement. Infested seeds lose their germination capacity, become unsuitable for human consumption, and are highly susceptible to secondary fungal infections.
- Prompt harvesting and destruction of fallen fruit to remove breeding grounds.
- Fumigation of stored products in airtight facilities to eliminate internal populations.
- Application of systemic insecticides during the fruit-setting stage.
- Strict quarantine inspections for shipments of susceptible plant materials.
Effective management relies heavily on preventative measures and post-harvest monitoring. Because the insect spends its life cycle inside the fruit, contact insecticides have limited success. Fumigation remains the most reliable method for controlling this pest in storage facilities, ensuring the protection of harvested goods from internal damage.
