Coccotrypes fallax

Coccotrypes fallax is a beetle species belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. This insect is primarily recognized as a seed-boring pest that targets the reproductive structures of various plant species, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.

The beetle causes substantial economic damage by infesting seeds of crops such as coffee, oil palms, and other technical commodities. By targeting the embryo and endosperm, the pest significantly reduces both the viability of the seeds and their overall commercial value.

The life cycle of this pest is completed within the host seed. Females bore into the seed coat and lay eggs internally. The developing larvae feed on the seed tissue, creating galleries filled with frass, which eventually leads to the complete destruction of the seed's internal structure.

Signs of infestation include small, circular entry holes on the seed surface. Upon dissection, internal galleries reveal the presence of larvae or adult beetles. In severe cases of infestation, entire batches of seeds can be rendered non-viable, leading to significant yield losses in agricultural sectors.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management practices. Key measures include strict phytosanitary inspections of imported goods, the use of fumigation for stored products, and maintaining cold storage conditions to inhibit beetle activity. Additionally, the prompt removal and destruction of fallen or infested fruits are critical for population suppression.
