Coccotrypes graniceps is a species of beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. Often referred to in the context of seed infestation, this insect is known for its ability to penetrate and consume the seeds of various tropical and sub-tropical crops, posing a significant risk to international agricultural trade.

The primary hosts of this pest include coffee beans, palm nuts, and diverse oily seeds. Because of its small size and cryptic behavior, it is frequently intercepted in international shipments. Identifying the presence of the beetle at early stages is a critical challenge for customs and agricultural inspectors.

The biology of Coccotrypes graniceps is characterized by endophagous feeding. The female beetle bores into the seed coat, creating an entry point where it deposits eggs. Larvae develop within the seed, consuming the endosperm and causing extensive internal structural damage. The entire metamorphosis occurs in the protected environment inside the host tissue.

The economic impact of this pest is severe due to the destruction of the seed's viability and quality. Infested products show small entry holes on the exterior, but the internal damage is catastrophic, often resulting in total loss of the batch. Furthermore, the presence of these beetles can lead to secondary fungal growth, rendering the commodity completely unsalable.
