Taxonomic position: Coccotrypes moreirai is a member of the order Coleoptera, belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. This insect is a significant pest specialized in colonizing the seeds of tropical trees, with a specific preference for coffee species, where it causes substantial economic damage.

Affected crops and damage: The primary host for this beetle is the coffee plant (Coffea spp.). The insect targets the developing fruit, boring directly into the seed. This activity leads to significant yield losses, reduction in bean quality, and secondary infections, rendering the product unmarketable for the specialty coffee industry.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Coccotrypes moreirai is strictly endocarpic, meaning it completes its life cycle within the coffee berry. Mated females penetrate the pericarp and deposit eggs within the bean. Larvae feed on the endosperm, creating complex tunnel networks inside the seed. This cryptic behavior makes the pest resilient to many environmental stressors and standard insecticide treatments.
