Description

Systematic position. Coccotrypes rotundicollis is a small beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, specifically within the Scolytinae subfamily. As a specialized pest, it is primarily focused on infesting the seeds and fruits of various botanical species.

Host plants. The pest shows a strong affinity for tropical and subtropical fruits. Significant economic losses are reported in coffee plantations, mango orchards, and nurseries dealing with palm seeds. The larvae consume the endosperm, making the fruits commercially non-viable.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this beetle is entirely concealed. Females bore into the fruit to deposit eggs directly into the seeds. The larvae spend their entire developmental phase inside the host, feeding on the nutritious core. Once metamorphosis is complete, the adults emerge through small, circular exit holes.

Damage and economic impact. The infestation leads to severe degradation of produce quality. Seeds infected by Coccotrypes rotundicollis are hollowed out and filled with frass, rendering them useless for germination or consumption. Furthermore, the boreholes serve as entry points for phytopathogenic fungi, which can exacerbate the rot of stored agricultural products.
