Description
Systematic position. The coconut fruit borer, Coccotrypes salakensis, is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. These small beetles are specialized xylophagous insects that target the reproductive structures of tropical palm species.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this pest are coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) and snake fruit palms (Salacca zalacca). The species also infests other palm varieties, focusing its attack on developing fruit, tender nuts, and floral stalks, which directly impacts crop production.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Coccotrypes salakensis is completed entirely within the fruit of the host plant. The female beetle bores into the fruit to deposit eggs inside the endosperm. Upon hatching, larvae tunnel through the internal tissues of the nut, creating complex galleries that destroy the seed’s internal structure before pupation occurs in situ.
Damage and economic impact. Infestation is indicated by tiny entry holes on the skin of the fruit. As larvae feed, the inside of the nut is transformed into dust and frass, leading to substantial yield losses. Furthermore, these entry points serve as pathways for opportunistic fungal and bacterial pathogens, often causing secondary fruit decay and premature fruit drop.
Control measures. Due to the beetle's cryptic habitat, management requires a combination of strategies:
- Strict sanitation, including the removal and destruction of fallen or infested fruit to break the life cycle.
- Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult beetle activity levels.
- Targeted insecticide applications during the early stages of nut development.
- Maintaining optimal palm health through proper pruning and irrigation to reduce susceptibility.
