Sierra Leone palm weevil

The Sierra Leone palm weevil (Coccotrypes sierraleonensis) is a member of the Curculionidae family, specifically belonging to the Scolytinae (bark beetle) subfamily. It is recognized as a significant pest of palm seeds, causing substantial economic losses in nurseries and during the international trade of botanical materials.

This species primarily targets the seeds of various palm tree species. Because the beetles spend the majority of their life cycle inside the seed, they are highly cryptic, often avoiding detection during standard customs inspections unless specific phytosanitary protocols are followed. Their ability to survive inside hard endosperm makes them a global quarantine concern.

The biology of Coccotrypes sierraleonensis revolves around seed infestation. A female beetle drills into the seed, creating a tunnel where she deposits eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the internal tissues, effectively hollowing out the seed. The insects pupate and transform into adults within the infested seed, emerging only to find a new host for reproduction.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily internal. External signs of infestation include small, circular entry holes on the seed coat. Internally, the seed loses its viability as the embryo and endosperm are destroyed, replaced by frass and necrotic tissue. Heavy infestations can lead to total loss of seed batches, rendering them useless for propagation or decorative purposes.

Management strategies focus on preventing the spread of the pest through regulated movement of goods. Essential control measures include:

• Rigorous phytosanitary inspection of imported palm seed shipments.
• Chemical fumigation to eliminate life stages hidden inside seeds.
• Heat treatment or steam sterilization for infected materials.
