Tanganyika coffee borer
Coccotrypes tanganus
Description
Systematic position: The Tanganyika coffee borer (Coccotrypes tanganus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. This species is a highly specialized pest known for causing significant economic losses in coffee production by directly impacting the quality of the harvested beans.
Host crops: The primary host for this beetle is the coffee tree (Coffea spp.). The insect focuses its activity on the fruits, where adult beetles and larvae penetrate the pericarp to feed on the seed endosperm, effectively destroying the economic value of the coffee bean.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Coccotrypes tanganus is uniquely adapted to the interior of coffee berries. Females bore into the fruit to deposit eggs, and the resulting larvae undergo their entire development within the seed. Pupation also occurs inside the bean, making this pest difficult to detect until the damage is already severe.
Nature of damage and economic impact: The damage is primarily caused by the tunneling activity of the larvae, which hollow out the interior of the coffee bean. This leads to a massive reduction in bean weight and renders the coffee unusable for industrial roasting. Infestations are particularly devastating because they often go unnoticed until the late stages of bean development, resulting in both quantitative and qualitative yield losses.
Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include diligent field sanitation, which involves the removal and destruction of fallen berries that harbor the pest. Chemical control is implemented through targeted insecticide applications during the adult migration phase. Furthermore, biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi, are increasingly used to manage populations effectively while minimizing environmental impact.
