The tea seed borer (Coccotrypes theae) is a destructive insect pest belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. This beetle is specifically adapted to inhabit and consume the reproductive structures of the tea plant, often causing significant losses in seed production.
The primary host plant for this species is Camellia sinensis. The beetles specifically target the seed pods (capsules) of the tea plant. By boring into these pods, the insects target the developing seeds, making them non-viable and directly impacting the propagation and genetic selection processes in tea nurseries.
The life cycle of the tea seed borer is confined within the seed pod. A female beetle bores through the capsule wall to lay eggs inside the seed tissues.
