Ant scale

The ant scale (Coccus formicarii) is a hemipteran insect belonging to the family Coccidae. It is a specialized pest known for its close biological association with ants, which often tend to the scale insects to feed on the honeydew they secrete. This relationship significantly aids the survival and spread of the pest across host plants.

These insects primarily infest woody ornamental plants, citrus species, and various greenhouse crops. They thrive in environments where they are sheltered from natural predators and adverse weather conditions. The adult females are sedentary, appearing as small, convex bumps on the surface of branches and leaves.

The life cycle begins with eggs laid beneath the female's body, which hardens into a protective scale. Once the eggs hatch, the crawlers (first-instar nymphs) migrate to tender parts of the plant. After finding a suitable site to feed, they settle, lose their mobility, and begin feeding on sap throughout their development.

Damage caused by this scale is twofold. Firstly, direct feeding depletes the plant's resources, causing chlorosis, stunted growth, and twig dieback. Secondly, the accumulation of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis effectively.

• Regular inspection of bark and leaf undersides for early detection.
• Application of horticultural oils to suffocate the insects.
• Use of systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence phase.
• Physical removal of heavily infested plant segments.
• Ant management to disrupt the symbiotic protection of the scales.

Effective management of this pest requires a proactive integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. By focusing on environmental hygiene, controlling ant populations, and timing chemical applications with the crawler stage, growers can successfully minimize the impact and prevent the widespread infestation of their crops.
