Long brown scale
Coccus longulus
Description
Coccus longulus, commonly known as the long brown scale, is a significant insect pest belonging to the Coccidae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects are characterized by their elongated, flattened, and light-brown bodies. They are widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions globally, often becoming a severe problem in commercial greenhouse operations and ornamental gardens.
The pest has an extensive host range, showing a high preference for a variety of evergreen plants. Major hosts include citrus species, Ficus, coffee, avocado, and various ornamental palms. Because they often infest the underside of leaves and young stems, their presence can go unnoticed until significant damage has already occurred, leading to widespread infestation.
The life cycle consists of eggs, mobile nymphs known as crawlers, and sedentary adults. The females remain attached to the plant surface for the majority of their adult life. The crawler stage is the most vulnerable phase for control, as these young nymphs actively move to find suitable feeding sites. Temperature heavily influences the rate of development, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the reproductive cycle.
Damage caused by Coccus longulus includes plant dehydration and nutrient depletion. A major indirect effect is the secretion of large amounts of honeydew, which fosters the growth of sooty mold. This fungus forms a black crust on the foliage, which inhibits photosynthesis, weakens the plant's immune system, and eventually causes leaf senescence and drop, severely reducing the aesthetic and economic value of the plants.
- Strict quarantine protocols for imported plant material.
- Pruning and removing heavily infested branches.
- Introduction of natural enemies like predatory beetles or parasitoid wasps.
- Regular monitoring using sticky traps to detect crawler emergence.
- Application of horticultural oils or systemic insecticides at appropriate growth stages.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions. Maintaining plant vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation is essential, as healthy plants are better able to tolerate infestation. When applying chemical treatments, it is crucial to target the crawler stage, as the waxy covering of the adult female provides significant protection against many contact pesticides.
