Description
Systematic position. The pearly scale (Latin Coccus perlatus) is classified within the class Insecta, order Hemiptera, and family Coccidae (soft scales). This species is a specialized plant pest that thrives by feeding on the sap of various woody plants, often going unnoticed due to its sedentary lifestyle and protective body covering.
Affected plants. This pest primarily targets a range of deciduous trees and ornamental shrubs. It is frequently observed in garden environments, nurseries, and parklands, where it colonizes branches and twigs. Its preference for specific hosts can lead to localized outbreaks, especially on weakened or stressed ornamental specimens.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves distinct stages: eggs, mobile crawlers, and sessile adults. Adult females remain stationary, developing a hard, pearl-like protective shell. After eggs hatch, the crawlers move actively across the plant surface, seeking ideal feeding sites. Once they settle, they insert their mouthparts into the plant tissue to begin feeding, effectively transitioning into the adult phase.
Damage and severity. The damage is caused by the extraction of large volumes of phloem sap. This leads to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and general wilting of the plant. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers leaves and blocks photosynthesis, further weakening the host and decreasing its aesthetic and structural value.
Control measures. Effective management of Coccus perlatus requires a multi-faceted approach.
