Description
Systematic position: The genus Conophthorus belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are commonly known as cone beetles, as they have evolved to complete their life cycle within the cones of coniferous trees, particularly those of the genus Pinus.
Host plants and damage: The beetles primarily infest the cones of pine trees. The economic impact is most severe in seed orchards and forest nurseries, where the activity of these beetles can lead to nearly total loss of the annual seed crop. By destroying the interior of the cone, they render the seeds inviable and drastically reduce natural regeneration rates.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is strictly synchronized with the phenology of cone development. Adults typically overwinter inside infested cones on the ground or under the bark of young shoots. During the spring, adults emerge and bore into developing cones to feed and lay eggs. Larvae develop inside the cone tissue, consuming seeds as they grow, before pupating within the same structure.
Nature of damage: Early signs of infestation include resin flow at the base of the cone and premature browning or stunting of the fruit. As the larvae tunnel through the central axis and seed scales, the cone dies and often falls to the ground prematurely. This damage is particularly devastating in areas with a limited seed supply or during poor mast years.
Control measures: Management of Conophthorus populations requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Sanitation thinning: collecting and destroying infested cones to reduce local beetle populations.
- Application of systemic or contact insecticides during the adult emergence and flight period.
- Use of pheromone baits and traps to monitor population density and time control applications effectively.
- Promotion of healthy forest stands to improve natural resistance to infestations.
