Systematic position: The white pine cone beetle (Conophthorus coniperda) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized pest that targets the reproductive structures of coniferous trees, particularly affecting seed production.

Crops affected: This beetle primarily infests various pine species, including the white pine (Pinus strobus) and Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris). It is particularly problematic in seed orchards where it can drastically reduce the availability of viable seeds for reforestation.

Biology and life cycle: Adults overwinter inside infested cones that may be found either on the tree or on the forest floor. With the arrival of spring, they emerge and bore into the base of developing cones to feed and lay eggs. The larvae hatch inside the cone, creating galleries as they feed on the internal tissues and seeds, eventually completing their development and pupating within the same cone.

Damage and economic importance: Infested cones typically stop growing, turn brown prematurely, and die. Resin accumulation at the base of the cone is a diagnostic sign of the beetle's entry hole. High populations can lead to severe losses, with individual trees losing the vast majority of their seasonal cone crop, significantly impacting natural regeneration and commercial seed supply.

Control measures: Management of this pest requires an integrated approach to reduce population levels:

• Sanitation practices, such as the removal and destruction of infested cones before the next emergence season.
• The use of pheromone traps to monitor adult beetle activity and suppress localized populations.
• Timed application of chemical insecticides during the initial spring migration and cone penetration period.
• Silvicultural practices that promote tree vigor and reduce the susceptibility of stands to beetle attacks.
