Description
Systematic position: Conophthorus contortae belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized pest that plays a significant role in the degradation of reproductive organs of pine trees, significantly impacting seed production.
Host plants: The primary host is the lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta). Due to its high host specificity, the beetle population dynamics are closely synchronized with the development of the cones of this specific tree species, making them vulnerable to infestation.
Biology and life cycle: Adults overwinter inside infested cones. With the arrival of warmer spring temperatures, the beetles emerge to feed on developing shoots and pine cones.
