Description
Systematic position: Conophthorus lambertianae belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized pest known for its destructive impact on the reproductive structures of specific pine species.
Host plants: The primary host is the sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana). The beetle restricts its activity to the cones of this tree species, significantly reducing seed yields and hindering natural regeneration in native forest stands.
Biology and life cycle: The adult beetles overwinter inside infested cones, whether they are still attached to the tree or have fallen to the ground. In spring, adults emerge and seek out developing cones to bore into. They create tunnels toward the cone axis where they lay eggs, and the resulting larvae feed on the seeds and internal tissues before pupating.
