Monterey pine cone beetle

The Monterey pine cone beetle (Conophthorus radiatae) is a small but destructive insect belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. Known primarily for its impact on pine seed production, this beetle is a significant concern for forestry professionals and those managing commercial timberlands where susceptible pine species are grown.

This beetle specifically targets the Monterey pine (Pinus radiata). The adults and larvae bore into young, developing cones, effectively destroying the interior tissues and seeds. Because these insects target the reproductive organs of the tree, an outbreak can lead to the near-total loss of the year’s seed crop, significantly hindering natural regeneration and nursery supply chains.

The life cycle of the beetle is closely tied to the host tree's phenology. Adults overwinter within the cones that have fallen to the forest floor or those that remain attached to the tree. In the spring, they emerge to infest new, green cones. The female bores into the cone, laying eggs inside. The larvae then hatch and feed internally, creating tunnels that disrupt the vascular connection to the tree, causing the cone to wither and die.

The damage caused by Conophthorus radiatae is often indicated by the premature browning and shriveling of young cones during the growing season. If one inspects an infested cone, they will find typical boring dust and pitch accumulation around the entrance hole. The primary economic impact is the reduction in seed quality and quantity, which complicates efforts to sustain pine populations.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include:

• Sanitation thinning by removing infested cones from the site
• Monitoring populations with specialized pheromone traps
• Application of insecticides during the spring flight period if infestation levels reach a critical threshold
