Beet weevil

The beet weevil (genus Conorhynchus) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). This beetle is recognized as a significant threat to sugar and table beet cultivation, particularly in regions with arid or semi-arid climates where it can reach high population densities.

The primary host plants for this pest are members of the Amaranthaceae family, specifically the genus Beta. Both adult beetles and their larvae cause damage. While adults feed on leaves and stalks, the larvae primarily target the root zone, which can severely compromise the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients.

The life cycle of the Conorhynchus species typically involves one generation per year. Adults overwinter in the soil or under surface debris, emerging in the spring when temperatures rise. After feeding on young sprouts, mating occurs, and females deposit eggs in the soil near the host plants, ensuring that emerging larvae have immediate access to the root system.

The damage caused by this pest can be devastating for young crops. Feeding by adults can skeletonize leaves, whereas larval root damage causes yellowing, stunted growth, and death of seedlings. In later developmental stages, the injured roots are prone to secondary infections, leading to rot and a drastic reduction in total sugar yield and crop marketability.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include

• crop rotation to prevent the buildup of soil-borne populations
• deep plowing to expose overwintering adults to adverse conditions
• seed treatment with systemic insecticides
• timely field monitoring during the emergence phase
• targeted foliar applications when economic threshold levels are exceeded
