Avocado seed weevil

The avocado seed weevil (Conotrachelus aguacatae) is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is considered a major economic threat to avocado production, particularly in regions of Central and South America, as it directly impacts the reproductive organs of the host plant.

The primary host for this species is the avocado (Persea americana). While adult weevils feed on the surface of the fruit and occasionally on tender stems, the most destructive stage is the larval stage. Larvae bore into the fruit and tunnel directly into the seed, consuming the internal tissue and often completely destroying the embryo.

The life cycle begins when the female weevil oviposits into the fruit flesh. The larvae emerge and migrate toward the seed, which provides the necessary nutrients for their development. After reaching maturity, the larvae exit the fruit, usually after it has fallen to the ground, and burrow into the soil to pupate. This makes the insect difficult to detect until the damage is already severe.

Damage caused by Conotrachelus aguacatae is characterized by small puncture marks on the fruit skin, often associated with sap exudation. As larvae develop inside, the fruit often drops prematurely. These entry and exit holes serve as sites for secondary infections, such as bacterial or fungal rot, which renders the fruit completely unsalable.

Effective management requires an integrated approach:

• Strict phytosanitary inspections for imported fruit.
• Regular removal and destruction of fallen fruits to interrupt the life cycle.
• Implementation of pheromone traps for early population detection.
• Strategic chemical control during the adult beetle emergence period.

Cultural practices, such as maintaining healthy tree vigor and ensuring proper orchard hygiene, are essential to minimize infestation risks. Farmers should prioritize early detection through monitoring, as once the larvae have entered the seed, chemical control measures become significantly less effective.
