Description

Systematic position and description. Conotrachelus anaglypticus, commonly known as the quince curculio, belongs to the family Curculionidae within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are characterized by their snout-like mouthparts (rostrum) and a robust body structure. They often possess mottled brownish or grayish coloration, which serves as a highly effective camouflage against the bark of host trees, making them difficult to detect during daylight hours.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are members of the Rosaceae family. The insect is named for its specific preference for quince fruits, but it is also known to infest apples, pears, and occasionally peaches. By targeting the developing fruit, this pest poses a significant risk to fruit production, especially in areas where these orchard trees are grown in proximity.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the quince curculio involves the female drilling a hole into the young fruit to deposit an egg. Once the larva emerges, it feeds extensively on the interior tissues and seeds of the fruit. After completing its larval growth phase, the larva exits the fruit, drops to the soil, and tunnels underground to pupate. The adult beetle emerges later to complete the annual life cycle.

Damage and economic significance. The damage is most visible through the premature drop of infested fruit. Upon inspection, infested fruits exhibit small, circular entry/exit holes and internal decay caused by larval tunneling. This results in significant fruit loss, reduction in marketability, and potential secondary fungal infections, which can jeopardize the overall viability of a commercial or home orchard.

Control measures. Effective management of Conotrachelus anaglypticus relies on integrating physical and chemical intervention strategies. Key recommended practices include:

  • Prompt removal and destruction of dropped fruit to break the larval life cycle.
  • Cultivating the soil beneath tree canopies to disrupt pupation sites.
  • Installing tree bands to trap adult beetles migrating up the trunk.
