Conotrachelus crataegi, commonly known as the quince curculio, is a significant insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family. It is notorious for its specialized feeding habits on certain Rosaceae fruits, causing substantial economic losses in orchards if not managed properly through integrated pest management (IPM) practices.
The host range of this beetle primarily includes quince trees, apples, and pears. While it shows a strong preference for quince, it can also infest hawthorn and other related woody plants. The distribution of this species is largely tied to the cultivation areas of these specific pome fruits, where it can maintain stable populations year over year.
The life cycle of the quince curculio is characterized by a long period of development. Adults overwinter in the soil beneath the host trees. During the spring, they emerge and start feeding on the developing fruitlets. Females use their long snouts to puncture the skin of the fruit, creating a cavity for egg-laying, which serves as the site where the larva will tunnel and grow.
The damage caused by this insect is distinctive. Larval feeding inside the fruit leads to stunted growth and severe deformities, resulting in gnarled, pitted, and unmarketable produce. Furthermore, the entry and exit holes created by the insect allow secondary pathogens to enter, which often leads to internal rot and premature fruit drop, significantly reducing total harvest volume.
