Hickory nut curculio

Systematic position: The hickory nut curculio (Conotrachelus hicoriae) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialist insect pest that primarily impacts nut-bearing trees in North America, posing a significant challenge to both commercial pecan production and natural hickory groves.

Host plants: This pest feeds exclusively on species within the Carya genus. Its primary hosts include various hickory species and the pecan tree. Due to its host-specific behavior, the presence of these trees makes the orchard or forest stand highly susceptible to infestations during the nut development stage.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle is closely linked to the seasonal development of nuts. Adult females create puncture wounds in the pericarp of developing nuts to deposit eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae tunnel into the center, feeding on the kernel. After completing development, the mature larva exits the nut, drops to the soil, and burrows underground to pupate and overwinter, emerging as an adult in the following season.

Damage patterns: The primary damage is caused by the larvae consuming the internal nut tissue. Infested nuts typically drop prematurely, often showing small, characteristic entrance holes on the exterior. This infestation renders the nuts non-marketable and significantly reduces the total yield if not controlled early in the season.

Control measures: Management requires an integrated approach to break the pest cycle. Key strategies include:

• Sanitation: Regularly collecting and destroying fallen nuts to prevent larvae from entering the soil.
• Cultivation: Tilling the soil under the tree canopy to disrupt pupation sites.
• Chemical control: Applying targeted insecticides during the period of adult emergence before egg-laying begins to minimize further damage to the crop.
