Description

The walnut curculio (Conotrachelus juglandis) is a destructive insect species within the order Coleoptera and the Curculionidae family. This pest primarily targets walnut trees, acting as a significant limiting factor in the commercial production of various nut species across North America.

It predominantly infests black walnut, butternut, and English walnut trees. The damage caused by this insect is twofold: adult beetles feed on young, succulent shoots, while the larvae tunnel into the developing nuts, causing severe internal tissue damage and eventual fruit loss.

The biology and lifecycle of this curculio involve overwintering in the soil as adults. As temperatures rise in spring, the beetles emerge and move to the trees to feed. Mating occurs shortly thereafter, and females lay eggs in the soft tissue of the developing nuts and shoots.

The economic impact is largely driven by the premature drop of infested fruit. When a larva matures inside a nut, it compromises the kernel, often resulting in decay or stunted growth. Furthermore, the feeding damage on shoots can lead to flagging, where branches die back and hinder the structural development of younger trees.

Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Sanitation is crucial, involving the collection and destruction of dropped nuts throughout the growing season to eliminate larvae before they exit into the soil. Chemical control using registered insecticides, applied during the initial emergence phase, can also significantly reduce infestation levels in commercial orchards.
