The Conotrachelus licaniae is a species of weevil belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This insect is recognized as a specialized pest that targets the reproductive organs and fruits of plants in the genus Licania, which are primarily known for their oil-producing properties in specific tropical zones.
The primary host crops for this pest include trees such as Licania rigida. Due to its life cycle, which is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host tree, this weevil can establish stable populations in plantations, leading to recurring damage if management strategies are not implemented consistently.
The biology of Conotrachelus licaniae involves an egg-laying process where the female uses her rostrum to puncture the fruit surface. Once inside, the larvae consume the internal tissues, effectively consuming the seed or the pulp. After larval development is complete, the larvae emerge from the fruit to pupate in the soil, transitioning into adults to restart the cycle.
Damage assessment indicates that the main impact is the physical destruction of the fruit's interior. This leads to premature fruit drop, which significantly reduces the harvest volume. Additionally, the openings created by larvae facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which can cause rotting of the remaining fruit on the tree.

This involves frequent field inspections to detect early signs of infestation, the removal and proper disposal of fallen, infested fruits to break the life cycle, and the tactical application of chemical insecticides.
