Black walnut curculio

The black walnut curculio (Conotrachelus retentus) is a significant pest belonging to the Curculionidae family within the Coleoptera order. This beetle primarily targets the black walnut tree (Juglans nigra), posing a substantial threat to nut production by feeding on the developing fruit and causing premature nut drop.

The biological cycle of this pest is highly synchronized with the growth stages of its host tree. Adults emerge from their overwintering sites in the soil during the spring. They engage in feeding on young shoots and buds before selecting suitable nuts to deposit their eggs. The female uses its snout to puncture the nut hull, making it a vulnerable point for the internal development of the offspring.

The larval stage is the most destructive phase for the host tree. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the kernel of the walnut, consuming it completely. Once fully matured, the larvae exit the nut, drop to the ground, and burrow into the soil to pupate. They typically overwinter as pupae or larvae depending on environmental factors, emerging as adults in the following year.

The damage caused by Conotrachelus retentus is characterized by small holes in the hulls of the nuts, often accompanied by frass. Affected nuts usually ripen prematurely and fall from the tree before reaching full maturity. In severe infestations, producers may lose a majority of their potential yield, making this pest a priority for orchard management.

Integrated pest management strategies include:

• Sanitation measures, specifically the collection and destruction of fallen nuts to kill larvae before they enter the soil.
• Cultivation or tilling of the soil under the tree canopy to disrupt the pupation process.
• Targeted chemical applications aimed at adult beetles before the egg-laying period.
• Frequent monitoring of orchards using pheromone or visual traps to determine the exact timing for intervention.
