Description

Cooperia is a genus of parasitic roundworms belonging to the family Trichostrongylidae. These nematodes are widely recognized as common gastrointestinal parasites of cattle, sheep, and other ruminants. They reside in the small intestine, where they attach to the intestinal wall, often causing significant subclinical or clinical disease in livestock populations worldwide.

The life cycle of Cooperia is direct, meaning it does not require an intermediate host. Eggs are excreted in the feces of an infected animal and develop into infective third-stage larvae within the environment, typically in pastures with adequate moisture and temperature. Once cattle ingest these larvae while grazing, the parasites migrate to the small intestine to complete their development into mature adults.

The pathogenic impact of Cooperia is mainly due to the damage caused by the larvae during their invasion of the intestinal mucosa. This results in inflammation, edema, and mucosal erosion, which disrupts normal digestion and nutrient absorption. While mortality rates may be low in adult cattle, the impact on weight gain and overall growth rates in young livestock is substantial.

Key clinical symptoms and indicators of heavy infection include:

  • Chronic diarrhea and weight loss.
  • Reduced feed conversion efficiency and poor growth performance.
  • Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
  • General malaise and lethargy in infected herds.

Management and control strategies primarily rely on the strategic use of anthelmintic drugs, such as macrocyclic lactones or benzimidazoles. However, producers must be aware of the rising prevalence of drug resistance. Integrated pest management, such as rotational grazing, pasture resting, and regular fecal egg count monitoring, is essential to minimize the parasite burden and maintain healthy livestock.
