Trichostrongylus axei

Trichostrongylus axei is a small parasitic nematode classified within the order Strongylida and the family Trichostrongylidae. It is a significant pathogen primarily infecting the abomasum of ruminants, such as cattle, sheep, and goats, though it is also known to infest horses and pigs, causing a condition known as trichostrongylosis.

While often miscategorized in general plant protection literature, this organism is a major veterinary concern that indirectly impacts agricultural productivity. The parasite's presence on pastureland acts as a limiting factor for livestock weight gain and herd health, necessitating careful management of grazing areas to mitigate the risk of continuous reinfection cycles.

The life cycle of this parasite is direct, occurring without the need for an intermediate host. Adult worms reside in the mucosa of the abomasum, producing eggs that are shed in the host's feces. Under favorable conditions of moisture and temperature, the larvae hatch and undergo development in the environment until they reach the infective stage, at which point they are ingested by grazing animals.

The harm caused by this parasite involves the erosion of the gastric mucosa, leading to chronic gastritis and impaired digestive function. Affected animals typically exhibit signs of weight loss, diarrhea, stunted growth, and general malaise. In severe cases, high worm burdens can lead to significant economic losses due to reduced livestock productivity and health decline.

Control measures primarily involve the strategic use of anthelmintic medications to treat infested animals. To prevent further infestation, farmers should practice rotational grazing, ensure proper manure management to eliminate larval reservoirs, and avoid allowing livestock to graze on poorly drained or overly saturated pastures where larvae survive and thrive for extended periods.
