Ostertagia
Ostertagia
Description
Ostertagia is a genus of parasitic nematodes within the family Trichostrongylidae. Unlike common plant pests, Ostertagia is a significant internal parasite that primarily targets the abomasum (the fourth stomach) of ruminant livestock, including cattle, sheep, and goats. It is recognized globally as a major cause of economic loss in the livestock industry due to reduced growth rates and production.
The lifecycle of the parasite is direct and occurs through ingestion of infective larvae from contaminated pastures. After eggs are excreted in the host's feces, they hatch into larvae that undergo development in the environment. Under optimal moisture and temperature conditions, these larvae migrate onto grass blades, where they are inadvertently consumed by grazing animals, starting the infection cycle anew.
Once inside the host, the larvae burrow into the gastric glands of the abomasum. As they develop, they destroy the cells lining the stomach, which leads to a loss of acid-producing capacity. This physiological damage prevents proper digestion of proteins, causes severe inflammation, and can lead to protein-losing enteropathy. In some cases, larvae enter a state of inhibited development known as hypobiosis.
Clinical signs of an infection, known as ostertagiasis, include persistent diarrhea, significant weight loss, anemia, and poor coat condition. Because the parasite interferes with the stomach's ability to digest food, infected animals often fail to thrive, leading to stunted growth in calves and decreased milk production in dairy cows. Severe infections can result in rapid weight loss and mortality.
- Implementation of strategic deworming programs based on fecal egg counts.
- Pasture management techniques, such as rotational grazing.
- Quarantining newly introduced animals to prevent infestation.
- Monitoring environmental conditions to predict peak larvae activity periods.
- Providing adequate nutrition to improve the host's resilience against parasitic burden.
