Haemonchus is a genus of parasitic nematodes that pose a significant health threat to ruminant livestock worldwide. It is crucial to note that Haemonchus is a gastrointestinal parasite of animals, not a plant pest. Known commonly as the "barber pole worm" due to the appearance of the female, it causes severe economic losses in the sheep, goat, and cattle industries.
Taxonomically, this organism belongs to the order Strongylida and the family Trichostrongylidae. Its ability to produce massive numbers of eggs and its resilience in various environmental conditions make it a major challenge for veterinary practitioners and livestock managers globally.
The life cycle of Haemonchus occurs both on pasture and within the host. Eggs are shed in feces onto the grass, where they hatch into infective larvae under warm and moist conditions. Livestock ingest these larvae while grazing. Once inside the animal, they travel to the abomasum, attach to the lining, and feed on blood, completing their development into adults.
The primary pathogenicity of this parasite is attributed to its blood-feeding behavior, which causes acute or chronic anemia in the host. Affected animals exhibit weakness, weight loss, "bottle jaw" (submandibular edema), and significantly reduced milk and meat production. Young animals are particularly susceptible and can perish rapidly in cases of high infestation.
