Copris

The genus Copris belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. Often referred to as dung beetles, these insects play a complex role in the ecosystem. While they are beneficial for decomposing organic waste, their burrowing activities in agricultural fields can occasionally lead to issues regarding pasture management and turf integrity.

The crops primarily affected by high densities of Copris are forage grasses located in livestock pastures. As these beetles tunnel deep into the soil to store dung for their larvae, they disrupt the root systems of grasses. This mechanical disturbance can lead to patches of dead or stressed vegetation, ultimately reducing the overall yield of the pasture.

The biology of Copris is defined by their maternal care and subterranean lifestyle. The female beetle excavates a deep burrow and constructs dung balls to house her eggs. The larvae develop entirely underground within these dung provisions. This specialized life cycle protects them from surface-level threats, making them resilient against standard pest control methods applied to crops.

The damage caused by these beetles is largely structural. Frequent digging around pasture roots increases soil aeration in a way that can dry out the rhizosphere of grasses. In extreme cases, the density of their tunnels can affect the stability of the soil surface, complicating the use of heavy machinery for harvesting or maintaining the land.

Integrated management is the most effective way to deal with Copris. Farmers should focus on keeping dung spread thinly across pastures rather than allowing large piles to form, as these piles attract the beetles. By maintaining healthy soil structure and managing livestock waste effectively, the negative impacts of Copris on forage production can be successfully mitigated without disrupting the broader ecological benefits they provide.
