Copris incertus

Copris incertus is a species of dung beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae. These beetles are widely known for their role in ecosystem services, particularly the recycling of animal waste. However, in specific agricultural landscapes, their digging habits can interfere with the structural integrity of pastures and forage fields.

As non-phytophagous insects, these beetles do not feed on crops. Instead, their life cycle is dependent on the presence of manure. Adult beetles dig complex tunnels beneath dung piles, creating brood chambers where they deposit the organic matter for their developing larvae. This behavior is fundamentally beneficial for soil health and nutrient cycling.

The biology of the species involves a complete metamorphosis. The female constructs subterranean cells, packs them with dung, and lays a single egg in each. The larvae develop within these dung spheres, protected from environmental extremes. The tunnels created can reach significant depths, effectively aerating the soil but simultaneously creating potential physical issues for surface vegetation.

The agricultural harm associated with Copris incertus is primarily physical. In regions with high population density, the extensive tunneling and the accumulation of soil castings on the surface can undermine the root systems of pasture grasses. This disruption of the soil profile can lead to patchiness, reduced forage yields, and increased vulnerability to drought for the affected plants.

Management strategies focus on minimizing surface disruption and promoting strong turf establishment:

• Regular harrowing of pasture land to smooth out soil mounds and disrupt brood tunnels.
• Rotational grazing systems to reduce localized accumulations of manure.
• Enhancing pasture density through overseeding to prevent soil erosion around tunnels.
