Dung beetle

Systematic position: The dung beetle known as Copris lunaris belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae (subfamily Scarabaeinae). This insect is a classic representative of ball-rolling or tunnel-making beetles, known for its distinct morphological features and specialized nesting behavior.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Copris lunaris is strictly tied to bovine or equine manure. Adults dig tunnels beneath dung pats, creating specific "brood balls" inside chambers underground. Within these nutrient-rich spheres, the female deposits eggs. The larvae hatch and consume the manure until they pupate, emerging eventually as adult beetles after completing their metamorphosis.

Damage and pest status: Although these beetles are beneficial for soil aeration and nutrient cycling, they are sometimes considered pests in managed agricultural fields. The primary damage occurs through the excavation of large mounds of soil, which disrupts the grass root zone. This activity can make pasture surfaces uneven, complicate mechanized mowing, and lower the quality of forage due to soil contamination.

Host environments: Copris lunaris thrives in areas with abundant livestock waste. Pastures, ranch lands, and fields adjacent to grazing areas provide the ideal environment. They are more active in regions with temperate climates where livestock presence is constant, providing a continuous supply of food resources for their larvae.

Management and control: Managing populations of dung beetles is rarely about total eradication, given their ecological importance, but rather about limiting their negative impact on farming:

• Regular pasture harrowing to spread dung and accelerate decomposition.
• Rotational grazing systems to avoid long-term buildup of manure in one spot.
• Maintaining high-density grass cover to protect the soil surface.
• Sanitation management in and around livestock barns to reduce breeding sites.
