Description
Systematic position. Coptoborus pseudotenuis belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae, and tribe Xyleborini. These insects are classified as ambrosia beetles, which exhibit a unique symbiotic relationship with specific fungi to facilitate their larval development inside host plants.
Affected crops. The pest is known as a polyphagous species that poses a significant threat to various woody plants. It is particularly noted for causing damage to coffee (Coffea) and cocoa plantations, as well as several fruit-bearing and ornamental broad-leaved trees in tropical and subtropical regions.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is inextricably linked to the fungal gardens cultivated by the adults. Female beetles bore galleries into the wood, where they introduce fungal spores. After eggs are laid, the developing larvae rely exclusively on this fungal mycelium, which grows on the walls of the galleries, for their nutritional requirements.
Damage and economic impact. Damage is caused by the physical disruption of the plant's vascular tissue and the introduction of pathogenic fungi that lead to vascular wilt and decline. Small circular entry holes on the bark and piles of boring dust are characteristic symptoms of an infestation. Severe attacks can result in reduced crop yield and plant death.
Control measures. Controlling Coptoborus pseudotenuis is challenging due to the insects being protected inside the wood tissue. Recommended strategies include:
