Corizus hyoscyami

Corizus hyoscyami, commonly known as the cinnamon bug or the scentless plant bug, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Rhopalidae. It is a widespread insect frequently found across Europe and Asia, often inhabiting agricultural landscapes, gardens, and meadows where it interacts with various plant species.

The adult bug is easily recognizable by its vivid red and black pattern, which acts as aposematic coloration. Measuring approximately 9 to 11 millimeters in length, the insect is covered in fine hairs. Its most distinctive feature, from which it gets its name in several languages, is the club-shaped thickening at the tip of its antennae.

The life cycle follows a pattern of incomplete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as leaf litter, dry vegetation, or under plant debris. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge, feed, and begin the breeding process. Females lay eggs directly on the host plants, and the resulting nymphs progress through several instars before reaching adulthood.

This species is considered a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a variety of plants. By using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, both adults and nymphs drain plant sap from leaves, stems, and developing seeds. This feeding activity often leads to stunted growth, yellowing of foliage, and decreased seed quality or overall crop yield reduction.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to handle this insect. Strategies for prevention and control include:

• Eliminating host weeds, particularly those in the Chenopodiaceae and Polygonaceae families.
• Implementing deep autumn plowing to disturb overwintering sites and destroy dormant adults.
• Applying selective insecticides only when pest populations reach economic damage thresholds to minimize environmental impact.
