Description

The Columbian timber beetle (Corthylus columbianus) is a destructive member of the Curculionidae family, specifically within the Scolytinae subfamily, known for boring into the stems of healthy and stressed hardwood trees. As an ambrosia beetle, it exhibits a unique symbiotic relationship with fungi, which serves as the primary food source for its larvae.

Primary hosts for this pest include various species of maple, beech, oak, and poplar. The beetle targets trees with sufficient stem diameter, allowing it to excavate complex galleries within the sapwood and heartwood, which significantly impacts both the structural integrity of the timber and the overall vitality of the tree.

The insect’s life cycle is intrinsically linked to its fungal symbionts. The female bores an entrance tunnel, creating branches for egg-laying. The larvae feed exclusively on the fungal gardens (ambrosia) cultivated by the adults within these tunnels. The rate of development and number of generations per year are highly dependent on regional climate conditions and the availability of suitable host trees.

Damage is characterized by radial tunnels that cause permanent staining known as "Columbian timber defect" or pith flecks. This discoloration drastically reduces the commercial value of the lumber, rendering it unsuitable for high-grade furniture or construction, while simultaneously acting as an entry point for opportunistic pathogens and secondary wood-decay fungi.
