Systematic position: Corthylus compressicornis belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is widely recognized as a wood-boring insect that occupies a specialized niche within the forest ecosystem, functioning primarily as a xylophagous pest.

Host plants: This species predominantly targets hardwood trees. In its natural range, it infests various deciduous species, often showing a preference for trees that are already under environmental stress, such as drought, mechanical damage, or competition, which makes them more susceptible to infestation.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is entirely completed within the host plant. The adult beetle bores into the xylem, creating a gallery system. These beetles are known to introduce specific symbiotic fungi into the wood, which the larvae subsequently consume. This mutualistic relationship between the beetle and the fungus is essential for the successful development of the brood.

Damage and severity: Damage is caused by both adult and larval boring activities. The galleries disrupt the vascular system of the tree, significantly impeding the flow of water and nutrients. The visible indicators of an infestation include small entry holes on the bark and piles of fine sawdust (frass) at the base of the tree, often followed by branch dieback or total tree death.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach. This includes:

• Rigorous sanitation logging to remove infested trees before the next generation emerges.
• The use of pheromone traps to monitor population density during peak activity periods.
• Maintaining forest vigor through proper thinning and site management.
• Application of systemic insecticides in high-value nurseries or botanical gardens where individual tree preservation is critical.
