Baris weevil

The Baris weevil (Cosmobaris americana) is a specialized insect pest classified within the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Known for its specific host preferences, this species can cause significant economic losses in various cropping systems, primarily by damaging the stems and roots of susceptible agricultural plants.

The primary crops affected by Cosmobaris americana are members of the Amaranthaceae family, most notably beets (sugar and fodder varieties). By feeding internally on the host tissues, the larvae disrupt the structural integrity of the plant, leading to stunted growth, reduced yields, and increased vulnerability to environmental stressors.

The biological development of this pest follows a complete metamorphosis cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult weevils typically emerge in the spring, feeding on foliage before mating and oviposition. Once the internal tissues are compromised, the plants are highly susceptible to secondary pathogens, which often cause further rot and overall stand thinning.
