Cossonus

The genus Cossonus refers to a group of beetles belonging to the Curculionidae family, commonly known as bark-weevils. These insects are specialized wood-borers that primarily inhabit weakened or decaying wood. Taxonomically, they are placed within the subfamily Cossoninae, encompassing species adapted to thrive in harsh environments within tree stems and trunks.

These pests target a variety of broadleaf and coniferous tree species. Cossonus beetles are most frequently attracted to trees suffering from physiological stress, disease, or damage caused by environmental factors. They colonize the cambium and xylem layers of trees such as oaks, pines, and poplars, especially those with high moisture content or existing decay.

The biology of Cossonus involves a complete life cycle, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Both adults and larvae lead a cryptic lifestyle, spending the majority of their lifespan tunneling through wood tissue. The presence of moisture is a critical factor for the development of larvae, which explains their preference for decaying or damp woody material.

The damage caused by these beetles is primarily structural. Larvae create winding galleries that damage the vascular system of the tree, significantly impeding nutrient and water transport. This activity not only accelerates the death of already weakened trees but also leads to severe degradation of the wood quality, rendering it useless for timber production.
