It primarily infests deciduous trees, including species such as poplars, aspens, willows, and occasionally alders. The beetle is attracted to trees with moisture-stressed wood or those already showing signs of decay, making them a common target in both forestry and ornamental tree maintenance.

Biology and lifecycle revolve around the development of larvae within the heartwood and sapwood. The female lays eggs in bark crevices, and the emerging larvae bore deep galleries into the tree. The life cycle involves distinct larval instars, pupation inside the wood, and the emergence of adults through characteristic circular exit holes.

Damage and harm caused by this beetle are significant because of the structural weakness and nutrient transport disruption. As the larvae tunnel through the wood, they destroy the vascular system of the tree, which promotes secondary infections by fungi and bacteria, leading to further decay and eventual tree mortality.

Control measures should focus on preventive silviculture and garden hygiene. Key strategies include the immediate removal and destruction of infested timber and fallen logs to break the reproductive cycle. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization can also make trees less attractive to these wood-boring pests.
