Cribrolecanium is a genus of scale insects belonging to the family Coccidae, order Hemiptera. These insects are sedentary pests that derive their nutrition by feeding on plant sap, significantly impacting the physiology of the host plant throughout their lifecycle.
The pest primarily targets various woody ornamental shrubs and deciduous trees. In agricultural and nursery settings, Cribrolecanium can cause extensive damage to young specimens, resulting in stunted growth, leaf yellowing, and a decline in the general vigor of the host vegetation.
The biological lifecycle consists of the egg stage, the mobile crawler (nymph) stage, and the sedentary adult stage. Adult females are protected by a hardened, convex scale that serves as a shield against predators and environmental stress. The crawler stage is the critical period for dispersal, as these tiny nymphs move actively across the bark to find suitable feeding sites.
