Description

Crossotarsus is a genus of beetles within the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are well-known as ambrosia beetles. Unlike traditional wood-boring insects, they maintain a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, which they cultivate within their tunnels to serve as their primary food source.

These pests primarily target hardwood species, although some variants can affect a wide range of woody plants. They are attracted to stressed, dying, or recently felled timber. By penetrating deep into the sapwood and heartwood, they create complex tunnel systems that compromise the structural integrity of the wood.

The life cycle involves the adult beetles boring into the tree and introducing fungal spores. The female deposits eggs within the tunnels, and the emerging larvae develop by grazing on the cultivated fungus. This activity leaves distinctive boreholes and galleries that are often stained dark by the fungal growth, leaving visible traces on the timber.

The economic impact is significant, particularly in the timber and furniture industries. Even a small number of beetles can cause "pinhole" defects and fungal staining, which drastically reduces the commercial grade and aesthetic value of the wood, rendering it unsuitable for high-end carpentry or structural use.

Effective management requires a combination of silvicultural and chemical strategies. Key practices include rapid removal of harvested timber from the forest, maintaining low moisture content in stored lumber, and applying protective insecticide treatments. Monitoring for frass (bore dust) around log piles is essential for early detection and preventing mass infestations.
