Crossotarsus armipennis is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). These insects are known for their destructive behavior in timber and plantation trees, often causing significant economic losses in regions where they proliferate.

This pest primarily attacks a variety of tropical and subtropical woody plants. It is notably problematic in commercial plantations of rubber trees and cocoa. By boring deep into the sapwood and heartwood, the beetles compromise the structural integrity of the trees and disrupt the flow of nutrients throughout the trunk.

The biology of Crossotarsus armipennis is fundamentally tied to ambrosia fungi. Adults excavate intricate tunnels within the host tree and introduce these fungi into the wood. The developing larvae feed exclusively on the fungal mycelium that grows on the tunnel walls, which provides them with the essential nutrients needed to complete their development.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the accumulation of fine wood dust or "frass" on the exterior of the bark, which is ejected by the beetles during tunnel construction. The resulting boreholes facilitate the entry of secondary wood-decay fungi and pathogens, eventually leading to tree decline, dieback, and reduced timber quality.
