The Conifer crossotarsus (Crossotarsus coniferae) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family, specifically within the Scolytinae subfamily. This beetle is a specialized wood-boring insect that targets coniferous tree species, playing a significant role in the degradation of stressed or fallen timber in various forest ecosystems.

The pest primarily infests weak, unhealthy, or freshly cut coniferous trees. These insects are particularly attracted to areas where forest maintenance is lacking, as they thrive on the chemical signals emitted by stressed trees. They are capable of colonizing large areas if the forest health index is low due to drought or mechanical damage.

The life cycle is characterized by a cryptic, internal lifestyle. Adult beetles bore deep galleries into the timber to establish breeding sites. Females deposit eggs within these tunnels, and the emerging larvae feed on both the woody tissue and symbiotic fungal growth carried by the adults. This internal development makes detection difficult until significant structural damage has already occurred.

The harm caused by this pest is mainly attributed to the mechanical destruction of the tree's vascular system. By creating extensive networks of tunnels within the sapwood and heartwood, they disrupt the flow of nutrients and water, eventually leading to rapid crown decline and tree mortality. The beetle's entry holes also serve as vectors for various pathogenic fungi, further accelerating tree decay.
