Description

Crossotarsus saundersi is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Platypodinae. These beetles are specialized inhabitants of woody plant tissues, known for their ability to bore deep galleries into the heartwood of host trees.

The host range of this species includes various deciduous and fruit trees. It primarily targets stressed or declining trees, although in cases of high population density, it can also infest relatively healthy trees, causing significant economic damage to both timber forests and commercial orchards.

The biology of Crossotarsus saundersi is distinct due to its obligate relationship with ambrosia fungi. Adult beetles excavate tunnels and introduce fungal spores into them. These fungi serve as the exclusive food source for the larvae. The entire life cycle, including pupation, occurs within these constructed tunnels inside the wood.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by circular entry holes and the presence of fine frass on the bark surface. The extensive network of galleries disrupts the vascular system of the tree, leading to crown dieback, reduced vigor, and eventually tree mortality. Infested timber also loses its structural and aesthetic value.
