Crossotarsus wallacei is a species of bark and ambrosia beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This insect is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest, particularly within tropical forest ecosystems. Its ability to penetrate deep into tree trunks makes it a major concern for both forestry management and timber production industries.

The beetle primarily attacks various species of hardwood trees. It is known to target stressed, weakened, or recently felled timber. While it often prefers dying trees, high population densities can lead to attacks on healthy trees, significantly undermining the health and structural integrity of the surrounding forest stand.

The life cycle of Crossotarsus wallacei is intrinsically linked to ambrosia fungi. Adult beetles bore tunnels into the host tree, introducing fungal spores that serve as a primary food source for their larvae. This symbiotic relationship allows the larvae to thrive within the wood galleries, rapidly increasing the infestation rate and accelerating the breakdown of the woody tissue.

The damage caused by this pest is characterized by circular entry holes and extensive internal gallery systems that penetrate deep into the sapwood and heartwood. These galleries result in permanent degradation of the wood, known as pinhole borer damage, which severely reduces its market value and makes it structurally unsuitable for high-quality lumber applications.
