Loquat bark beetle
Cryphalus eriobotryae
Description
The loquat bark beetle (Cryphalus eriobotryae) is a small insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This species is a specialized pest known to infest loquat trees (Eriobotrya japonica) and other related Rosaceae species, often causing significant damage to orchard health and commercial production.
The biology of this pest involves the adults boring through the bark into the cambium layer to establish galleries. The female lays eggs within these tunnels, and upon hatching, the larvae feed on the inner bark and phloem. This feeding activity disrupts the flow of nutrients and water, which is critical for the tree's survival and fruit development.
The economic impact of Cryphalus eriobotryae is severe, as heavy infestations can lead to the wilting and death of branches or entire trees. Signs of damage include visible entry holes on the bark, accumulation of frass (fine wood dust), and localized dieback of twigs. In many cases, trees weakened by environmental stress are particularly susceptible to colonization.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this bark beetle. Cultural practices such as maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation are the first line of defense. Furthermore, rigorous sanitation, including the removal and immediate destruction of infested branches by burning, is crucial to reduce the population density in the area.
- Regular field scouting to detect early signs of infestation.
- Sanitary pruning of dead or declining branches.
- Strategic use of systemic insecticides during adult emergence.
- Maintaining tree health to improve resistance against bark beetles.
Chemical control focuses on applying insecticides during the peak activity periods of the adults. Since the larvae are protected inside the tree, systemic insecticides are generally more effective than contact-based products. Growers are encouraged to monitor population levels using pheromone traps, if available, to time applications precisely and minimize environmental impact.
