Description

The beech scale (Cryptococcus fagisuga) is a sap-sucking insect belonging to the family Eriococcidae, order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a major pest of beech trees (Fagus species), particularly the European beech. This insect is primarily known for its role in the complex process of "beech bark disease," where the feeding damage creates entry points for parasitic fungi such as Nectria species.

The life cycle of the beech scale is adapted to survive on the bark of its host. The insect produces a white, woolly wax secretion that protects it during its sessile life stage. Reproduction is entirely parthenogenetic, with only females being present. Once eggs are laid in late summer, the resulting crawlers emerge, move across the bark to find suitable crevices, and settle down to feed for the remainder of their lives, overwintering in place.

Damage caused by the beech scale is manifested through the persistent extraction of phloem sap. This feeding process stresses the tree and disrupts the normal vascular functions. The woolly white substance is the most obvious sign of infestation, often appearing as patches on the tree trunk. As the scale population increases, the bark may crack, creating deep fissures that are subsequently colonized by fungi, leading to the formation of necrotic cankers.

The harmfulness of this pest is significant, as it can lead to the widespread mortality of entire forest stands. Trees weakened by the scale are unable to defend themselves against fungal pathogens, which ultimately causes the decay of the inner bark and cambium. This progression results in crown thinning, dieback of branches, and, in advanced stages, the death of the tree, which significantly alters forest composition.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling beech scale infestations:

  • Sanitation, including the removal and disposal of heavily infested trees during dormant seasons.
  • Monitoring of tree health to detect the white waxy spots early in the infestation cycle.
  • Chemical control using horticultural oils or systemic insecticides in specific management contexts like ornamental landscapes.
  • Encouraging natural biological control by predatory insects, such as twice-stabbed lady beetles.
