Mottled willow borer

The mottled willow borer (Cryptorhynchus lapathi) is a significant wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is widely recognized as a serious pest in forestry, commercial nurseries, and urban landscaping environments across the Northern Hemisphere.

This species primarily attacks members of the Salicaceae family, showing a strong preference for various willow species (Salix) and poplars (Populus). In some instances, it may also infest alders (Alnus) and birches (Betula). Young, vigorously growing trees are particularly susceptible to severe infestations that can lead to total structural failure.

The life cycle of the mottled willow borer is typically biennial or annual, depending on environmental temperatures. Adult beetles emerge in early spring to feed on the bark of young shoots. Following mating, females deposit eggs into crevices in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the woody stems, excavating galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the host tree.

The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, which tunnels deeply into the sapwood and heartwood. This activity causes branch dieback, crown thinning, and eventual mortality of the plant. Furthermore, the boreholes serve as entry points for secondary pathogens and wood-decay fungi, which further weaken the tree's internal structure and stability.

Management of this pest relies on integrated strategies to maintain tree health and suppress population outbreaks. Effective control measures include:

• Systematic pruning and destruction of infested branches or trees to eliminate the larval population.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper silvicultural practices, including sufficient irrigation and nutrition.
• Application of approved insecticides to the stems during the flight period of adults to prevent oviposition.
• Biological monitoring using pheromone traps to time the application of protective treatments effectively.
